The importance of tyres can sometimes be overlooked. Although it's stating the obvious, tyres are the only contact your vehicle has with the road and are therefore critical to your ability to accelerate, steer and stop.
Winter tyres improve your ability to accelerate, steer and stop in colder temperatures, snow and ice. They are designed differently to normal tyres and made from softer rubber.
In various European countries, by law, winter tyres have to be fitted between certain months of the year. So why don't we have the same law here?
Weather conditions, certainly in the south of England, tend to be milder than in European countries where winter tyres are a legal requirement. Whilst we might have a few snowy days in our part of the world each year, we tend not to see the same prolonged wintery conditions of the continent.
If your vehicle covers a lot of miles during the coldest winter months then switching to winter tyres could be worthwhile. Generally speaking, the higher your mileage, the more likely you are to be encounter incidents on the road where you need to take evasive action. Winter tyres might make the difference between a near-miss and a collision.
If you drive fewer miles it's unlikely that the costs and benefits will stack up for you.
