Renewing Car Bulbs
Renewing a bulb in modern cars can be tricky as you may have found out - manufacturers purposely make it increasingly difficult.

Most rear bulbs require a small amount of investigation on how to gain access and the type of bulb required (a quick check of the handbook) to know if the access is from outside or inside the car, and to remove the lamp if you need tools or if it’s clip release.

Front bulbs including headlamp bulbs can be more difficult as incorrect removal or fitting can result in damage to the lamp or end up with little or no beam pattern in the case of headlamps.

Here are some dos and don't when renewing bulbs in your vehicle:
  • Don’t change bulbs with lights on
  • Don’t force fittings until you're sure of how to remove
  • Do try to change bulbs in daylight where possible
  • Do take special notice of the position of bulb before removal (especially headlamp bulbs)
  • Do refit all trims and lamp covers as they prolong bulb life and headlamp quality
At Direct Services we fit most bulbs for free correctly when we supply the bulb.

We Can Service Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles (or "EVs") are getting more and more popular all the time. Many of the big car manufacturers now have EVs in the model line-ups, popular cars include the Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe and the BMW i3.

With all this new technology, you could be mistaken for thinking that servicing an electric vehicle is complex and expensive. In fact, often the opposite is true. With fewer moving parts than internal combustion engines, EV servicing is often faster and cheaper than a petrol or diesel equivalent.

For example, many electric vehicles also use regenerative energy braking systems, which reduces the wear on braking components such as brake discs and brake pads. This is another reason why servicing an electric vehicle is cheaper.

At Direct Services we have all of the diagnostic equipment needed to service electric vehicles to manufacturer standards, without the main dealer price tag. Get in touch today to find out how much you could save by servicing your electric vehicle with us, without any compromise on quality.
Don't Ignore Warning Lights!
If you see a warning light appear on your dashboard it's worth getting it checked... for free.

Over the years, vehicles have become increasingly complex. If you're not a mechanic, or an enthusiastic amateur it can be hard to know what your car is trying to tell you.

Dashboard warning lights can vary in importance - it might be a false alarm, it might be something minor... or it could be something major - that one day leaves you stranded by the side of the road, or leads to many pounds worth of damage to your vehicle.

We recommend getting it checked sooner rather than later. From just £25 + VAT we plug-in our latest diagnostic equipment, explain what it means and give you our expert recommendation. There's no obligation for further work, hard-sell, or anything unpleasant like that.

Surely it's better to find out what is wrong with you car, fix it if necessary, and potentially avoid a costly breakdown and repair?
Are Winter Tyres Worth It?
In certain European countries, winter tyres are a legal requirement. Are we missing a trick in the UK?

The importance of tyres can sometimes be overlooked. Although it's stating the obvious, tyres are the only contact your vehicle has with the road and are therefore critical to your ability to accelerate, steer and stop.

Winter tyres improve your ability to accelerate, steer and stop in colder temperatures, snow and ice. They are designed differently to normal tyres and made from softer rubber.

In various European countries, by law, winter tyres have to be fitted between certain months of the year. So why don't we have the same law here?

Weather conditions, certainly in the south of England, tend to be milder than in European countries where winter tyres are a legal requirement. Whilst we might have a few snowy days in our part of the world each year, we tend not to see the same prolonged wintery conditions of the continent.

If your vehicle covers a lot of miles during the coldest winter months then switching to winter tyres could be worthwhile. Generally speaking, the higher your mileage, the more likely you are to be encounter incidents on the road where you need to take evasive action. Winter tyres might make the difference between a near-miss and a collision.

If you drive fewer miles it's unlikely that the costs and benefits will stack up for you.

Next time your vehicle is in our workshop why not ask us about winter tyres and we will gladly offer our advice.
